Custom Frit Film Enhances Safety and Style at UMMC Pediatric Services

At the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Mississippi’s only academic medical center, design is more than aesthetic—it’s a statement of purpose, safety, and innovation. Nowhere is this more evident than in the newly upgraded pediatric services stairwell, where a stunning custom frit pattern has been applied to a multi-level glass handrail using CreativeFX custom window films. Installed by Midwest Glass Tinters of Jackson, MS, the film was carefully applied to the exterior-facing side of the handrail—requiring multi-story lift access and precision handling for a clean, long-lasting finish.

Architectural Function Meets Artistic Form
Glass handrails are increasingly favored in modern architectural design for their ability to create open sightlines, promote natural light flow, and deliver a sleek, minimalistic aesthetic. However, when used in high-traffic areas—especially in healthcare and pediatric settings—glass requires thoughtful customization to ensure visibility, spatial division, and safety compliance.

A custom printed white frit wave pattern, engineered to create a sense of fluidity and forward movement as visitors ascend or descend the stairwell. The design adds an engaging sense of motion to an otherwise transparent safety feature, encouraging the eye to travel along the space and guiding visitors through the environment.

Why Film? Smarter Specification for Glass Design
Applying a decorative frit pattern with window film offers substantial cost advantages over direct-to-glass options like screen printing, sandblasting, or back painting. CreativeFX films replicate the refined look of etched or ceramic frit glass at a fraction of the price—and with greater flexibility for design changes or future updates.

The spec called for printing to an optically clear, durable film with an application  to the exterior of the handrail to maintain visibility and clean easily—crucial in a high-touch healthcare setting.

Precision Installation, Lasting Impact
Executing the project on a multi-level stairwell presented installation challenges that Midwest Glass Tinters handled with expertise. Using a lift to access the upper levels of the railing system, the team applied the film with precision, ensuring consistent alignment of the wave pattern across all floors. The result is a fluid, continuous design that aligns perfectly with the building’s architectural rhythm.

Smart, Safe, and Designed with Intention
This project exemplifies the power of custom window film to elevate architectural glass with intention and creativity. As Katie Jasmin, VP of National Sales for CreativeFX, puts it:

“In a world where every material is asked to do more, glass is no exception. When utilizing the option of custom decorative film, you’re not just defining space—you’re curating an experience.”

At UMMC, that experience now includes safer navigation, artistic inspiration, and a celebration of pediatric care—all embedded in a single stretch of glass railing.
